The Great Totem Festival Debuts This Saturday on Cherokee Street
On Saturday, October 5, Tucci Events, Loyal Family and 2720 Cherokee host the inaugural Great Totem Festival, and it promises to be, well, more fun than you can shake a stick at. The event takes place from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Cherokee Street between Texas and Iowa avenues and is free to the public.
Press Photo Euforquestra will perform at the Great Totem Festival.
"We rallied artists, performers and thriving talent on Cherokee Street for this one-day party in the street to the celebrate the neighborhood," says event producer Alexis Tucci. "A totem represents an object or animal that embodies the spirit of somebody or something. We figured this would be a great opportunity for artists to express themselves."
Local artists will create these stacked-symbol totem poles to decorate the street that day. Local groups and organizations including the FarFetched collective and STL Hoop Club will also create smaller handheld festival totems to wield throughout the day.
Live music takes place across three stages: two outdoors and one inside 2720 Cherokee that will open up in the evening. The list of performers follows: Euforquestra, Black 22's, Aaron Kamm and the One Drops, It!, CaveofswordS, Unifyah, Jump Starts, Black James, Scrub Lyfe, Franco-Hill, Goodness Gracious, Jeremy Joyce and Bootigrabbers Delight.
DJ sets come from DJ MAKossa, Hal Greens, Nappy DJ Needles, Dub Heezy, Quasar Camp, Crate 2 Crate Sound System, Coreyography and DJ Trevor Matthews.
From 1 to 3 p.m., kids' activities make the event family-friendly: crafts, a petting zoo, bubbles, airbrushing by Art Monster and music by Celia. In addition to all that, the event features a facial-hair competition, an open-air market, live art installations, street dancing and drumming, and food from area businesses and food trucks.
All in all, it's the pretty quintessential experience you'd expect from 2720 Cherokee and company.
