Six Musicians You Didn't Know Might Be Bigots

Categories: Nitpick Six

2. Prince

With his perfect eyebrows and pixie-like frame, Prince is the kind of guy who has probably been called a lot of names. Which is why it's so surprising that the man, who became a Jehovah's Witness, may be a firm opponent of gay marriage. A 2008 interview with the New Yorker yielded the following quote (while the artist tapped on his Bible):

"God came to Earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was like, 'Enough.'" He paused. "I just live according to this."

Prince also unexpectedly popped up on the radar of gay-rights supporters after the lyrics to one of his new songs, "Da Bourgeoisie" (supposedly about an ex), were revealed:

Yesterday I saw you kickin' it with another girl You was all wrapped up around her waist Last time I checked, you said you left the dirty world Well it appears that wasn't the case Hey, I see you undercover like the CIA Snatching little wigs from another bouquet -- that's French I guess a man's only good for a rainy day Maybe you're just another bearded lady at the cabaret I wish I never kissed your (spits in disgust) ugh Doesn't replace the memory

1. Courtney Love

I got into a shouting match recently with a friend of mine at a bar. I stated that I didn't care for Courtney Love because she seemed like an asshole and her music wasn't very good, save for a few songs off of Live Through This. The reply to my declaration was that I was sexist and threatened by a woman with a strong personality. Perhaps my friend is right.

Or maybe I'm threatened by a woman who goes pheasant hunting and then hangs out and poses for photos with the Tories, the right-wing, xenophobic political party of the UK.

Hmmm. Or maybe it's this Washington Post review of a Courtney Love show from 2010, in which she singles out a young female audience member and asks, "Do you really like rock music? Because you're African American. That would be like me being into Lil' Wayne"

Bigot, maybe. Asshole? Definitely.

An article on bigotry that the writer is condemning many, but he puts a gunshot straight through his own shoe: "as stimulating as browsing a Christian singles website"

Bigotry can be racism, homophobic, or religious. Drew Ailes, Look in the mirror to see the face of bigotry.

The Riverfront Times once again trolling the only way they know how. These troll authors type these articles from under a bridge.

Yet another horrible article from a very bad writer.

An article composed of assumptions is not journalism.

writing posts like this and sharing them with the uneducated mid-40s white male masses is just asking for a slew of "i didn't do anything, why isn't there a white history month" comments. I appreciate the post but oi your audience is too dumb to get it.

No one is to stone anyone until I blow this whistle. Even if, and I want to make this perfectly clear, even if he says "Jehovah".

I hear that Prussian Blue may have had a little problem with Jews. But that's just hearsay.

@ Jeb - a lot of the high school clubs that you speak of were formed because blacks were not allowed to join the original "whites only" clubs. The message that you get from everything that you mentioned only shows me that you aren't able to see things from different perspectives.

I didn't read this, but based on my quick scroll through the comments I've come up with the following response: ”That artist? Who cares. Everyone has done something. This artist did that thing. We're all good and/or bad. RFT is good or bad. Race, right?”

Jon, yeah i wasn't even considering the "was he saying 'white power' or 'and power'?" Thing. I was addressing the two rants he did regarding white pride where he prefaces the rants with "Pantera are friends with people of every color and creed" but then goes into a rant about how he thinks its bullshit that white people can't have white pride.

I think Black History Month, & African American clubs at school, B.E.T., ect, sends a message (at least to me, a white guy) of "hey, we're pissed at YOU for something that happened to somebody like me 400 years ago, so we're going to become ultra introvert, exclude other races from our lives & continue to hold it against you." To which I think , "fine. Fuck you, guess we'll never be friends" I'm tired (as a white dude) of being lectured about America's history with slavery. I've been on this planet for 40 years, I wasn't here for it, didn't do it, STFU.

i see your point, but i was merely reflecting on how someone misinterpreted a lyric. it seemed like it was a bit reaching. the lyric was "a new level of confidence and power" and someone thought he was saying "white power". I thought it was stupid. Also, Phil Anselmo should have been killed, not Dimebag.

RFT is like a really awful high school newsletter. The only parts even remotely worth reading are the food/music sections.

Despite my own whiteness, I feel it IS racist and wrong to talk about white pride and white power, while I don't feel there's really anything wrong with African-Americans talking about having black pride and black power. I am also completely cool with the fact that I can't say the n-word. I know a lot of people who disagree with me on this. Phil Anselmo's rants, to me, are racist to a certain extent. His rants sound like the people who go "Why isn't there a White History Month or a White Entertainment Television?" I know Phil and Pantera weren't entirely racist; they were "Hey, it's cool, I can say this, I have some black friends" kind of racist.

im sure alot Pantera fans are bigots, but i dont see how "a new level of confidence and power" is racist

I think this is a little silly.. I dont think anyone should be sued for their beliefs whether they be moral or immoral.. I dont aggree or disaggree, but its still silly none the less.. greed is just as immoral as racism!

It's easy to smear someone's reputation with a lawsuit and as I found out you don't have to have too much of a case to find a scumbag lawyer to take it. Life lessons I suppose, but hard to live through.

Nothing could be further from the truth about Prince.  Your credibility as a writer has totally gone out the window when you misspell the word/name "Jehovah."  I am originally from Minneapolis/St. Paul.  Prince at one time would have parties at his house every Saturday Night.  He'd play for a small crowd in his back yard.  I know him personally, and he has many gay friends.  You, my friend are the "bigot" assuming that just because of his religious beliefs that he's against gay rights.  I'd be curious to know what you have against him, or against freedom of religion to even mention him in this article.  When he was quoting about God, he was referring to the Sodomites.  But I wouldn't expect you, nor be educated in religion enough to listen to a pro-gay rights, agnostic, educated in biblical verse.  Typical media trash, taking things out of context.  Perhaps you'd like to see photos of "Prince" Rodgers Nelson, myself and a few of our gay friends together...  unbelievably irresponsible journalism, my friend.

Hmm, Prince didn't seem to have any qualms about giving us the idea that Wendy and Lisa were taking a bath together in that one song. But at least now we know why Busta Rhymes wants us to keep our hands where his eyes can see.

Bigot (noun): a person unafraid of being politically correct : a person who hates or refuses to accept the members of a particular group.

Example: Saul hates Nazis for killing his family in the concentration camps. Saul is therefore a bigot.

To label a person as a bigot, is itself, a bigoted act and thus reflects upon the author's own prejudices. Now hipsters , go write an article on people you didn't know might be racist.
