Paul Lamere/The Echo Nest

Recently Paul Lamere of the Echo Nest, a "music intelligence platform" company that claims to "automatically know everything about music," developed a map that displays each state's uniquely favorite artist.

Lamere used Spotify to find his data, compiling information from the popular music-streaming service and comparing musicians' overall popularity in America with those same musicians' popularity in each individual state. In this way, he was able to suss out what artists are disproportionately represented in the states and thereby produce unique "favorites artists" for each.

So in Missouri, we like the Shins. I'd certainly call that respectable. At least compared to some of the other states -- looking hard at you, Arizona. Oh and West Virginia, not giving you a pass, either.

Make a note of it: Missouri has infinitely better taste in music than Arizona and West Virginia. So we got that going for us, I guess.

(Make sure you also check out this map of the LEAST popular musicians by state as well. It is very scientific.)

jesus, i'm amazed how piss poor so many people's reading comprehension is, and how many people are gettinhung up on where bands are from. are you stupid? we all know nirvana is from washington, but we also know, BECAUSE IT SAID IN ThE ARTICLE, that all that means is the nirvana is the most listened to band on spotfiy by users in that state. jesus christ...

I actually love The Shins and I listen to them all the time... so maybe I skewed the results? Or maaaaybe, the guy that did this study followed me around state-to-state just to creep me on the Internet. I always listen to Rick Ross in Florida. ALWAYS!

I feel like I know who the shins are but have never heard anyone talk about them.

totally bogus. The Shins are not from Missouri. We got Bonobo??!! That dude is British. And it has Nirvana from the East Coast, they're from Washinton. Is this a joke? lol

That WashPost article a couple posts up explains it. I do like the map now that I know what it is attempting to show. There are lots of great under-the-commercial-radio-radar bands and artists on there.

I'm trying to figure out the argument and pride in the article. Are you saying Missouri is better because more people like a band that nobody has ever heard of? Sounds like the same elitist stuff I've been hearing for decades from people who want to feel superior for no real reason.

Look, I'm not a Shins fan (they're fine, I have no opinion one way or the other really), but most of you people don't even know who they are? How? I barely keep up with pop culture and I've known of them for ten years.

Really, RFT? Compared to Linkin Park, The Shins aren't even recognizable.

Never heard of them, watched a couple of videos, then tried to listen, and just enjoy the music.......didn't happened. I was hoping for something really good!:( Old Pale Devine/The Eyes, still runs circles around these guys.

Congrats to missouri for having better taste than most of the country lol. I've never known anyone here who likes the shins though.

Spotify is their source, really! Go up to north central missouri and see if they play The Shins on the radio. Better yet does any non college radio station (also excluding 88.1) in st louis play The Shins?
