Who's Up For a Drunks With Guns Tribute Band?
Let's face it: St. Louis loves itself some tribute bands. An Under Cover Weekend sells out every autumn, and KDHX puts on several well-attended tribute benefits a year. We've even got competing Beatles tribute bands in town. That's the only reason why the following news is not a complete shock.
Yesterday on Craigslist, a mysterious post appeared with this subject: "Drunks with Guns/Strangulated Beatoffs tribute forming (Crestwood/NoCo)." Under a picture of DWG's Alter Human Industrial Fetishisms EP, the anonymous poster laid out the offer: "Forming a Drunks with Guns/Strangulated Beatoffs/Bullets for Pussy tribute band. These are some of St. Louis' most influential bands in Europe and Japan. Looking for guitar, keys, drums, and knob twiddlers. All proceeds will be given to the original band members, for their psych meds."
Our response? It's something we had no idea we wanted, but that we genuinely hope will actually happen.
For a few years in the 1980s, DWG specialized in a specific brand of sludgy, Sabbathized post-hardcore. Fueled by beer and adrenaline, songs like "Beautiful Happiness," "Wonderful Subdivision" and "I Got The Gun" featured lead singer Mike Doskocil yelling over Flipper/Melvins style power-chording. Wonderfully raw and simple, Drunks With Guns' recordings not only predicted much of what Amphetamine Reptile Records released a few years later, but actually put St. Louis on the record-collector map. Widely read fanzines like Forced Exposure and Conflict gave the band good reviews. Ajax Records carried its records in its mailorder catalog. Sebadoh covered "Wonderful Subdivision" live. Word even got to Europe, where an otherwise dreadful compilation album called Beautiful Happiness took its name from one of the Drunks' songs. Not bad for a band that never toured -- in fact, according to Doskocil, DWG only played four times, all locally.
The band didn't last long. Its members ended up hating each other, ultimately dissolving into a murky haze of acrimony and rumored lawsuits. Guitarist Stan Seitrich went on to form the Strangulated Beatoffs, while Doskocil formed Bullets for Pussy and ultimately left St. Louis for Columbus, Ohio.
So are you in? If so, the Craigslist poster would like you to "email me a dick pic and your contact info. Even if you're a chick, I want a dick pic." We thought of contacting the poster to ask some questions, but frankly, the part about the dick pic was enough for us to reconsider. But if this tribute idea makes it to a local stage, we are there.
