Rappers and Ravers: Quit Glorifying Drugs That Kill

Are ravers the modern day hippies? There are plenty of parallels, from the flower imagery to the PLUR mentality. Then, of course, there's the idea of using drugs as a path to enlightenment. (Or at least, amazing vibes.)

But when it comes to drugs there's a key difference: The hippies were safer. From their weak-ass pot to their LSD, their preferred recreational drugs were less likely to kill you.

Sure, anyone can get a "bad" dose of drugs, but as Dennis Romero reported in September, all of those rave deaths you hear about aren't a result of, say, molly mixed with rat poison -- they're the result of molly itself.

But EDM devotees aren't the only ones glamorizing unsafe drugs. Hip-hop, which has featured its own sporadic shout-outs to MDMA over the years, has became increasingly obsessed with lean, a.k.a. codeine-promethazine cough syrup combined with soda (and sometimes Jolly Ranchers).

Sure, death from LSD is possible, but rare. And the idea that it makes you say, "Hey! Wouldn't it be fun to jump off a building?" is baloney.

As for ecstasy, or molly? That stuff ends folks' lives on the regular.

What started as a phenomenon confined mainly to Houston and the South has spread out all over the country; mainstream rappers including A$ap Rocky and Drake have talked it up in song. Even Miley Cyrus had on her tour giant screens featuring animated images of overflowing cups of purple drank.

The difference here is that lean is not just killing rap fans -- it's killing rap artists themselves. Out of Houston alone, the deaths of DJ Screw, Big Moe and Pimp C were all tied in to syrup use. A lean addiction nearly killed Lil Wayne; at the very least it contributed to him getting eight root canals, which is as bad as death.

Particularly annoying are rappers like Fat Joe, who have glamorized it in song and don't even use it themselves.

We understand that youth music is always going to trade in rebelliousness; we get the whole sex, drugs, and rock & roll thing, and understand that you can't stop kids from getting fucked up. And, yeah, obviously, legal stuff like alcohol and cigarettes have killed more people than lean or ecstasy ever will.

Perhaps the RFT should write an article about the harms of legal drugs that like opiate pain killers and adderall. Those drugs kill way more people than lean and MDMA. Perhaps write an article about china and India manufacturing legal/grey market/illegal drugs that mimic the effects of MDMA because that's what Molly is. Or investigate how pharmaceutical companies have entire pallets of promethazine codeine syrup disappear and no is prosecuted. Here is a hint, it didn't "fall of a truck". Given how the RFT seems to have jumped the shark and become a bait click generator recently... here is a great story to write. It involves Instagram and people using fake accounts and burner phones to sell ____ (insert popular illegal drug here) follow that up with why green dot is allowed to have hundreds of millions of dollars change hands anonymously. This article has good intentions and I appreciate what the author was trying to say.. but please do your research next time. If in doubt follow the money is my advice. If you are reading this and you feel trapped by addiction seek help now! You only get one life don't live it as a slave. Drugs are bad M'kay!

Driven that train high on cocaine while Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is looking for the shelter of a mother's little helper.... I am not a rap / hip hop fan but, that article is few decades late. I wrote something on that while in high school. I used all the "dope songs" to write a cool speech.

Don't like 'em don't take 'em. People can say what they like, you don't have to like it. Choke on one RFT.

Nonsense. Indulge! It reduces the unemployment rate. There just aren't enough sandwiches out there for all of us. Some of you are just going to have to make room for the responsible.

I agree with the "don't take drugs that will kill you" sentiment in general, but sadly most of the article's facts are either partially misleading or totally incorrect.

Not to be a dick, but the stuff you guys are referring to as Ecstasy and Molly, are not ecstasy or Molly. They are not MDMA (Molly/X), they are generally a mish mash of random new chemicals, the stuff they spray on that fake weed crap. True MDMA is not gonna kill you. The fake shit will. If you really feel the need to roll, test kits are out there, buy them. Then be sad when you find out it's all fake these days. Unless you know a chemist don't waste your time. At least be informed as to what you're putting in your body.

"Ravers" don't necessarily do that. One Progressive House guy makes a song about Molly and it's a huge phenomenon for good and bad reasons. Rappers have been glorifying some of the raunchiest things I've ever heard on top of violence against your peers, but no one seems to care.

I hate nanny statists who want to restrict or ban alcohol, tobacco and minor drugs, but at the same time, I question the sanity of people who like to make speeches about how these drugs are not only perfectly healthy, but even "good" for you.
