Does Sugar Ray Actually Suck?

Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast writes sunny indie-pop that traditionally has drawn from bands like Fleetwood Mac and the Beach Boys. Right now, however, she's feeling inspiration from a more unlikely source.

"As cool as I want everybody to think I am, I don't care: I think Sugar Ray has written some really great songs," said Cosentino, in a recent interview with Spin.

Sure, Newport Beach's own Sugar Ray is mostly remembered for popularizing frosted tips with chin goatees, and making aggressive gestures next to swimming pools. (That and its dopey 1997 smash hit "Fly.")

But you know what? We respect Cosentino, and therefore decided to dig deep into the Sugar Ray catalog. Here, then, are its five best songs.

5. "Answer the Phone"
2001
After the lame Creed-tinged intro, "Answer the Phone" has a nice pop-punk flavor that could be confused for another Best Coast influence: Blink 182. The roaring chorus is catchy and, hey, the song also mentions roller coasters, which is never a bad thing. Maybe Cosentino's onto something!

4. "Mean Machine"
1995
This one is different! It's one of Sugar Ray's "hardest" songs, and it includes a Mick Mars-influenced guitar intro. So that's something!

3. "Under the Sun"
2001

Hmmmmm. The more we listen to this one, the more we can't recommend it. Sorry. Let's see if we can find a No. 2.

Saw him with sister hazel, uncle kracker, and smashmouth just last week and he was the most entertaining of the group by far. He put on a great show. So my vote is "does not suck".

Sugar Ray knows Sugar Ray sucks. Sugar Ray knows what Sugar Ray is doing. They went from hard rock to pop overnight and raked in piles of money, thus the ironic name of their best-known pop album, 14:59.

Does Sugar Ray make more money than everyone here? Yes. Someday I will discover how to turn my snark and disdain into gold. Until then, I remain another bitter internet commenter. Sad smiley face. Also: I have an awesome story about Sugar Ray at the Illinois State Fair so I can't hate in good conscience.

Not necessarily. But one thing is certain, RFT and the douchebag hipsters writing for their music page certainly suck. Big time.

"All the great ideas I had and how we just made fun of those who had the guts to try and fail" - Ben Folds Five, on the Riverfront Times in a nutshell.

Riverfront Times: Thank you for the response. It was a good read, and I appreciate you taking the time to answer my concern. But perhaps I should've been more specific. There have been so many RFT blog posts written not only close-mindedly and negatively, but also by writers with lack of research, or consideration, on the subject. Maybe two months ago, one of your writers did a piece on "The seven most underrated songs of all time." Four of the seven songs were by the same band. Really? If we're going to throw in the massive "Of all time" card, either that band is so insanely awesome and no one has ever picked up on it, or your writer has narrow music taste, OR, didn't ask around to as many music aficionados he knew to get their input on the piece. But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Last week, RFT released the piece on "Purple Rain's" 30th anniversary. It was well-researched, well-written and well-considered. I was so damn pleased to read it I shared it immediately, urging others to read the RFT post that "wasn't angry, sarcastic or written by someone close-minded." I'm a STL native, born and raised, and I've always loved the RFT. Shit, in J school, I even wanted to work for you guys. I understand the idea of "smarm" to an extent, but please remember who your readers are, and also, what your writers are doing.

There's a reason I have a 90's radio station on my pandora. I was born in 88 so I got to grow up young with some kick ass (and not so kick ass) music but regardless of how good it is, it always reminds me of growing up.

They need to print out this reply, blow it up and plaster it all over their office. If I wanted to read a bunch of whining, I'd subscribe to reddit.

I'm so tired of all this negative crap from RFT. Here's the important part: I'm guessing the majority of you are millennials, raised in the 90s. Embrace your youth, don't shit on it. This is coming from a fellow journalist (and music lover, and millennial).

Ummm... I don't have to read this to know the answer. They have sucked since I was 12.
