Adam Hucke, victim of last night's shooting.
UPDATE: According to police the suspect is a "male, dark complexion, early twenties, wearing a white t-shirt and white pants." He fled the scene in a red Chevy Monte Carlo. The full police report is now at the bottom of this post. (End of update; original story below.)

Funky Butt Brass Band trumpet player Adam Hucke is safe at home now after being the victim of a stray bullet last night at the Broadway Oyster Bar, located on the 700 block of South Broadway. The shot was part of a rolling shootout between cars near the White Castle across the street.

The incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. Hucke was at the venue to perform with Big Mike Aguirre and the Blu City All Stars, out on the patio bar when he was struck in the shoulder. The shot came from across the street.

Police say there were six or seven shots fired in total. At this time they have no description of either car involved and have named no suspects. A shell casing was found in the White Castle parking lot, but it is unclear whether it has anything to do with this incident.

Hucke was transported via ambulance to the hospital. On his Facebook page, he shared a brief message at 5:39 a.m. that simply read, "I'm good. I'm home. Time for bed."

Funky Butt Brass Band relayed the following message on social media:

St Louis is sickening.  People being shot in their back yards, playing music, walking down the street.... All because they live in this giant crap hole of a town.

The city county merger will never occur.  The county does not want to be included in the rampant crime stats.  And the county does not want to be the scape goat just so the city can dilute its crime stats.

That sucks! That's going to be an expensive hospital bill and not many musicians have health insurance. Tip him extra if you see him perform.

We need to start putting pressure on the justice system for far stricter sentencing for violent offenders. Most of the crime comes from repeat offenders and we need to protect our citizens better an make the city a safe place to live in and go to for playing as well. This is unacceptable and we should not tolerate this any more. We are better than this and we need to start holding the justice system responsible for this.

I think it's important to call attention to the fact that this isn't an isolated incident. There have been shootings on this street multiple times. Maybe this was the only newsworthy incident.

Sad. I don't know that I honestly can disagree with Ryan above. Start setting up shop with checkpoints like they have in gaza . What's the difference between this and terrorism?

This city needs military instead of police. Put some snipers and tanks in the hood.

Shootings do not happen all the time downtown. Do we have crime? Yes we are metro city. Like all others we have our share. Our crime rate is lower then you would think. Remember that our crime data is based on the city core and excludes the numerous tiny cities and county around Stl that most other cities get to use as stat diluting population numbers. I've lived downtown and worked downtown for years and LOVE it. I have never had problems but like any other city you have to be smart. The community is fantastic. We all know each other, and care about the future of the city. The police work very hard but are very under staffed. Writing off the city as lost or saying it should be burned doesn't help the situation. Speaking up, patronning the many fantastic restaurants, bars, hotels, sports venues, shops, and attractions will help keep the city growing. We need the city. Without it the area will die all together. You may not know this but the city has been improving and growing steadily for years. If you compare how it was just 15 years ago you can see the improvement. Share the many fantastic festivals we have with neighbors, visit the area, don't spread fear about it. I am always astonished by people who live in County and never come downtown. NO people don't get shot, mugged, or attacked all the time. 99.9% of visitors have a great time and leave just fine. This incident sucks. That bar is normally just fine, I have walked to and from it many times. Random acts just happen sometimes. It doesn't mean the cities lost.

"The suspect, male, dark complexion"... Does that mean African American? How come a Caucasian "suspect" would be described as "white", yet the media dances around describing a suspect as "black"?

I was blindsided by a few people right outside of the oyster bar, it was a scary incident where they were either trying to rob or rape me, one guy held me while another punched me and tried to drag me into the alley right next to the front door entrance.fortunately someone came out just in time to stop them. The oyster bar didn't have cameras in the front or side of the building. This happened a couple years ago, I've been back since but I don't feel safe downtown anymore

Daniel-thank you for writing an article with some details.  The RFT's reporting is consistently the best in St. Louis.  I was astonished at the lack of details on stltoday.  Keep up the good work!

No this doesn't "happen everywhere". I love oyster bar & will continue to go there, but geez downtown STL has gotta get its shit together. I realize there's no easy solution and that is frustrating.

Re: the shooter Ad a nurse, I had a patient the had Alzheimer's, and she hadn't spoken a word in 5 years. One day, out of the blue and clear as a bell, she told me: "Do know what, honey? Human beings are the nastiest animals!" I gave her a hug and a kiss and told her, "You haven't spoken a word in 5 , and that is quite likely the most profound statement you have ever made in your life! " A huge smile spread across her face. She died 2 weeks later.

Interesting comment and quite naive.  I lived in the city for 8 years beginng in the mid 1990s on the south side near what is now St. Alexius Hosp.

In those 8 years Every single one of my friends had been the victim of a crime that happened within the city.  From vandalism, to burglary, to robbery, to MURDER.  As for myself... my home was burglarized, my car was vandalized, I was assaulted by a gang of thugs and beaten.  It never let up.

St Louis could be a fun place to live and recreate, but this rampant crime is a huge hindrance and will prevent it from ever being a great city.
