This year's RFT Music Showcase (June 7) is already shaping up to be a hell of an event. In addition to moving it from Washington Avenue to the Grove (along Manchester between Kingshighway and Vandeventer), we have also reached out to some of the local acts we've long retired to the "Hall of Fame," asking if they want to be a part. In keeping, this year's event will feature performances from St. Louis' Pokey LaFarge and So Many Dynamos.

The crowd for Dots Not Feathers at last year's music showcase.
Surely you know the drill by now: Each year, RFT Music recognizes the hard work and exceptional talent of St. Louis' local musicians with the RFT Music Awards. In addition, our summer awards showcase, to be held this year for the first time in the Grove, provides local music lovers an opportunity to see dozens of these bands and musicians in action, with sponsorship by loads of local businesses.

So, it is that time again! We are enlisting your help in choosing the best bands in the city. It is our goal to provide a definitive list of the most talented acts in town, but we can't do it alone. Who are your favorites? Who in St. Louis do you think deserves more recognition? Post your picks in the comments below. (Please be sure to only pick from the acts in the St. Louis region.)

Why the Grammys Don't Matter

grammys560.jpg
About this time five years ago, I was driving around with the radio tuned to a classic-rock station when whatever supercomputer Clear Channel uses to program its stations decided it was time for "Heart of Gold." "That was Neil Young," the DJ bantered afterward. "Congrats to him for winning his first ever Grammy last night."

"Seriously?" I thought. "It's 2009, and Neil Young just got his first Grammy? He didn't get anything for 'Harvest Moon' or 'Rockin' in the Free World' or 'Ohio'? Nothing for Harvest, one of the biggest albums of the '70s?" Clearly, AllMusic.com had to be consulted.

Grammys Highlights: Daft Punk Wins, Pharrell's Hat, Taylor Swift Has Sex with a Piano

Here at RFT Music, we care about our readers. We want to bring you sunshine, not rain. Joy, not pain. That's why we sucked it up and watched the ridiculous 56th annual Grammy awards last night -- so you didn't have to.

No need to thank us -- we were happy to sit through four hours of hell to earn your love. We endured everything from Katy Perry's battle with the Harry Potter dementors to Robin Thicke corrupting Chicago (the band, not the city, though we imagine that happens too) to Daft Punk winning everything but refusing to say thank you. The entire Grammys telecast wasn't completely terrible, though. We also got to witness a performance from the two surviving Beatles and Kendrick Lamar making Imagine Dragons sound infinitely better than they really are.

The Village Voice's annual critic's-list-to-end-all-critic's-lists, the venerable Pazz & Jop issue, is now in circulation. Each year the Voice polls hundreds of music critics across the country in an effort to provide the most comprehensive list possible of the former year's most critically-acclaimed music.

Here are the albums and singles chosen by RFT Music writers Bob McMahon, Mike Appelstein and Jaime Lees. You'll definitely see more than one St. Louis artist within, so read on!

A few weeks have passed since we found out who will be officially inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April. Which means enough time has passed for the migraines and projectile vomiting to have subsided.

Here's a scorecard for the inductees of the Class of 2014. First to note, using the words "class" and "Kiss" in the same sentence should get you sent to an asylum for three days of observation. Ready? OK then. I've done them in order, from the ones who make sense to those who were seemingly picked by that mythic group of monkeys chained to typewriters.

The eleven alternative weeklies of Voice Media Group are responsible for a tremendous amount of music writing: This year, we produced thousands of pages of printed stories and tens of thousands of blog posts. We're proud to present the very best of that work in the second annual Voice Media Group Music Writing Awards.

Each of the eleven music editors around the country selected his or her favorite articles from 2013 in two categories: blog posts and print stories. A judging panel comprising senior music editor Ben Westhoff, Houston Press music editor Chris Gray and me (I'm the music editor of the Dallas Observer) then voted to pick the winners, who will get a cash prize.
