Every year we attempt to compile a list of the best and brightest musicians in St. Louis. Think of it as a checkpoint -- a historical documentation of the local music scene at a moment in time.

Last week we released a robust list of nominees for the 2015 RFT Music Awards. We cannot speak enough about the wealth of talent and ingenuity in our scene, but we think this list is a good start.

Introducing the 2015 RFT Music Awards Nominees

Categories: Music Awards

MusicShowcasePoster.jpg
It's that time again! Each year, we present the RFT Music Awards, an annual celebration of the best and brightest musical acts St. Louis has to offer. The nominees are chosen by a panel of venue owners/employees, promoters/talent buyers, record store staff, dedicated diehards and other musical minds from organizations all over the city -- and then the winners are chosen by you, the readers.

Important: If you are one of this year's nominees, that means that you are invited to perform at the RFT Music Showcase, to be held this year in the Grove on June 20. Space is limited, so slots are first come, first serve. Fill out this form by May 11 to participate. See you there!

The polls will open for voting by the week of May 18, so check back to riverfronttimes.com in two weeks. In the mean time, congratulations to all our nominees!

Last year's RFT Music Showcase brought a perfect storm (both literally and figuratively) of local music to the Grove area of Manchester Avenue. Lightning is set to strike twice: We're proud to announce that we'll be returning to the same location this year, with June 20, 2015 as the date for this year's grassroots music festival. Mark your calendars now!

Surely you know the drill by now: Each year, RFT Music recognizes the hard work and exceptional talent of St. Louis' local musicians with the RFT Music Awards. Our summer awards showcase -- to be held again this year in the Grove -- also provides local music lovers an opportunity to see dozens of these bands and musicians in action, with sponsorship by loads of local businesses.

So, it is that time again! We are enlisting your help in choosing the best bands in the city. It is our goal to provide a definitive list of the most talented acts in town, but we can't do it alone. Who are your favorites? Who in St. Louis do you think deserves more recognition? Post your picks in the comments below. (Please be sure to only choose from the acts in the St. Louis region, of course.)

Music director David Robertson leads the Grammy-winning St. Louis Symphony.

In the time since the St. Louis Symphony's last win at the Grammy Awards, a child could have been born, learned to drive, voted and had its first legal beer.

That is, until February 8, when the symphony took home a 2015 Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance. SLSO's first Grammy win since 1991 was for its February 2013 performance of John Adams' City Noir, which was released on Nonesuch Records last May.

St. Louis Symphony Earns Two Grammy Nominations for City Noir Recording

Music director David Robertson leads the Grammy-nominated St. Louis Symphony.

Everyone knows that the St. Louis Symphony is one of the premier orchestras in the world. The latest Grammy nominations simply seal the deal.

St. Louis' globally renowned ensemble is up for two Grammys centered on its Nonesuch Records recording of John Adams' City Noir, a piece about Los Angeles in the '40s and '50s that the composer describes as "jazz-inflected symphonic music." During the February 8 awards ceremony, SLSO has the opportunity to take home prizes for "Best Orchestral Performance" and "Best Engineered (Classical) Album."

"It is wonderful to be recognized for what we are doing all the time, in the concert hall and in the community," says music director and conductor David Robertson. "People who have known the orchestra for decades have been writing to tell me they have never heard the group sounding as good as it does now. It takes a whole team to produce such results, and I could not be more proud to have this nomination as proof of the blessing we have with the SLSO."

Thanks to all of the musical acts that participated in this year's RFT Music Showcase, all those who were nominated for an award this year, everyone who attended the show and voted for their favorites, all the venues in the Grove who hosted the event and most of all you for caring enough about St. Louis' local music scene to be reading this right now. Each year we work hard to present the best and brightest that St. Louis has to offer, and we couldn't do it without all of the above. Congratulations to the winners of the 2014 RFT Music Awards.

Humdrum Launches Hilarious Smear Campaign Against RFT Music Awards Nominees

Don't get on Humdrum's bad side, politicians!

Whew! Voting for nominees in the 2014 RFT Music Awards closed over the weekend, and we'll announce the winners in our special shindig tonight at Atomic Cowboy! In general, RFT Music Awards nominees have been pretty sweet in the way they've campaigned for votes. Local musical acts posted adorable band photos to Facebook and said "Please" when asking Twitter followers to vote via text. We're in St. Louis, after all -- we have good manners.

But that all changed once Humdrum was nominated for a 2014 RFT Music Award in the "indie rock" category. Willing to do anything for a win, Humdrum launched a hilarious video campaign with the political firepower of The West Wing and a fierce intent to destroy the band's opponents -- Aquitaine, Bear Hive, Pretty Little Empire and Sleepy Kitty. So as not to play favorites, we waited until voting closed to report about this, but trust that it is awesome.

WHEW! Well despite the constant threats made by the weather, this year's RFT Music Showcase went off without a hitch. It was fun seeing that many music fans swarming about in the Grove, and even more fun to watch the 88 local acts in attendance. Thanks to all who participated and came out!

But we're not quite through yet -- there is still the little matter of the awards themselves.
