Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton: Meacham Park Boils Over

Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 05:53:12 PM

The morning after a gunman killed five people in a Kirkwood City Council meeting, a group of more than 100 assembled in the predominantly black neighborhood of Meacham Park to make sense of the tragedy. Inside a packed classroom in the old Turner Elementary School, the crowd recalled the events leading up to Charles “Cookie” Thornton’s murderous rampage.

In recent years the 52-year-old Thornton had alleged that Kirkwood officials violated his civil rights and levied illegal fines against the asphalt company he operated out of his Meacham Park home. And while few in attendance Friday morning would condone Thornton’s actions, many residents said they sympathized with him.

Family and friends of Charles "Cookie" Thornton pray Friday morning. From left to right: Arthur Thornton, Rev. Anthony Stevens, Annie Bell Thornton and Velma Madison.
“There is a great divide between Kirkwood and Meacham Park,” said Harry Jones, a church elder with Men's and Women’s Faith Ministries in Meacham Park. “And that divide goes back to the 1920s and ’30s. Today when our children go to the Kirkwood Community Center or swimming pool, they’re hassled for ID. The division is much greater than we want it to be. There are a lot of broken hearts here on both sides.”

Ben Gordon, an activist with the Rock Hill-Webster Groves Family Community Center, was perhaps the most outspoken person present, going as far as to call Thornton a “hero.”

“He was a good man. The only problem was he thought he could survive in America against racist politics. And what we have here is an example of what will happen as long as people choose color over people,” said Gordon. “I don’t condone murder, but I tell you now, as long as there is separatism and unequal politics you’ll see more of this. He did what any red-blooded American would do. If you go to Iraq and kill people that this government says is an enemy, then you’re a hero. But if you’re fighting in this country for the rights you are deserved and you’ve been told you are owed, then you are an insurgent. I say he is a hero.”

Michael Moore, a friend of Thornton, said he received a call from him at 2 p.m. Thursday, only hours before the assassin took the lives of two Kirkwood police officers and three city council officials.

“He told me he wanted to thank me for things I’m doing in the neighborhood,” recalled Moore. “He told me he was going to the council meeting last night. I was going to join him, but then I remembered I had to watch my son. If I’d had gone with him to the meeting, I would have stopped Cookie from doing what he did. But just by trying to stop him -- in the confusion -- I believe I would have been shot [by police], too, because black people in this community don’t go to the city council meetings.”

Moore pointed out a long history of racial strife in the community, dating back to 1893 when Kirkwood tried to stop a black vocational school in Meacham Park -- which at that time was not part of the city of Kirkwood -- from relocating to the city. “In 1954 they almost had a race riot because they didn’t want black kids going to Kirkwood schools,” said Moore. Other residents recall that many homes in Meacham Park did not have indoor plumbing until late in the 1970s.

In 1991 Kirkwood annexed Meacham Park, and a few years later the city issued $17 million in tax-increment financing in order to replace half of Meacham Park’s 106 acres with Kirkwood Commons, a retail development at Big Bend and South Lindbergh boulevards that today is home to a Target, a Wal-Mart and a Lowe’s.

“In the taking of Meacham Park, Kirkwood has gotten rich off the backs of blacks,” said Moore. “All that money went to Kirkwood. You want to know where the pool is, the community center is? It’s out there in Kirkwood. The only reason Kirkwood annexed Meacham Park was for the check.”

Thornton -- says his friend Randy Norton -- was angry for the neighborhood. “Part of that TIF was supposed to build affordable homes for the residents of Meacham Park. But instead of costing $160,000, those homes are $240,000. People can’t afford them.”

Earlier Friday morning, at Thornton’s home in the 300 block of Attucks, family and friends recalled him as a kind and charitable man, and a great line dancer. “Cookie” was the first word he uttered as an infant, and it remained a lifelong nickname.

“Last thing he told me before he walked out the door was, ‘To God be the glory. I love you and see you later,’” said Thornton’s mother, 83-year-old Annie Bell Thornton. “He’d been going to church since the age and three and was a very religious man.”

Thornton’s mother said her son ran for Kirkwood City Council in the early ’90s and lost, and had constant run-ins with the city ever since. He complained that the city would not issue him work permits for much of the private driveway repair and other asphalt work he did within the city limits. Last year Thornton filed a federal lawsuit against Kirkwood claiming the city had violated his civil rights. Two weeks ago a federal judge rejected his lawsuit. A black three-ring binder on the coffee table in Thornton’s home holds all his legal filings.

A family friend, Charles Rummels, remembered how Thornton and other Meacham Park men who met regularly for breakfast would rent a limousine during the holidays and take children for rides throughout the city. Later the men would give away gloves, coats and hats. “He had my daughter and some of her friends do yard work for him last fall and paid them $100. He was like an uncle figure in the community. And I think he felt he was pushed to the limit.”

Thornton’s brother Arthur said Thornton seemed to reserve most his anger for Kenneth Yost, Kirkwood’s director of public works. “In the beginning it was a civil relationship, but somewhere it turned personal and he felt he abused and attacked. Last few times I talked to Cookie about it, he was sort of obsessive. He felt there was no justice.”

Some hero. The difference between our servicemen and women in Iraq and this nutcase is that my children feel safer for the former doing what they do, not afraid to walk down the streets of our own city.

The thing that gets me about these attitudes is that these folks seem to think that they are the only ones asked for ID at the Community Center, and the only ones required to pay parking tickets or code violation fines. Guess what? My kids are asked for ID there too, every time. And they're white. How convenient for this man's issues to be race-related.

The law is the law, whether he liked it or not. This man showed complete disrespect at the many government meetings he attended, and was rightfully thrown out for disrupting the process. Regardless of how 'disenfranchised' he felt, killing people is not the answer. Period. What a stellar example he has set for the kids of Meacham Park.

united we stand, divided we fall says:

My thought on the Kirkwood City Hall Shootings is this. People do always want to use racism as the reason why something like this happens but,i do not believe this is always the case. I have seen similar situations happen in many neighborhoods, including my own. Once the police and city hall take notice of you and do not like you, you become singled out. This has happened in my neighborhood and it wasn't between black and white. It was between white and white. It became so bad between this person and the police they we're forced to move from the neighborhood due to constant harrassment from police. I believe Cookie was a decent man who snapped and could not take anymore, everyone has a breaking point! Still that is not any excuse for murder. If we we're to use this as an excuse for murder, where would it end.I have sympathy for ALL the familys and friends on that horrific day.

I do have something to say about Meachem Park however. It has become a place for crime. Maybe not since it began but, the last five years it has went from a family oriented neighborhood to one of drugs and crime.I had heard stories of Meachem Park and thought them overblown by a predominantly white community. I found out first and that wasn't the case. Never had i seen so much drug activity in such a small neighborhood!A friend of mine has a sister who was a crack and meth addict.Meachem Park is the neighborhood that suppied her habit. As me and my friend drove around looking for her sister, who we did locate in a crack house in Meachem Park.We saw drug dealers on many, many, corners and we're offered crack rock by no less than six people and offered stolen credit cards. We we're also threatened with a gun on two occasions by drug dealers while searching for her drug abusing sister(knew looking for her was a bad idea but, how can you give up the ones you love). I'm not saying everyone in Meachem Park are bad, drug dealing people. I believe there are many good people anywhere you look. Many pizza and food delivery places will not deliver to this area since about 3-5 years ago a female pizza delivery driver was brutally sodimized by the men she delivered the pizza to.This neighborhood needs to be cleaned up and taken back by the GOOD people of Meachem Park. People are scared of this area,it has a bad rep due to it's crime rate.If it continues it's decline this will be the next community to be COMPLETELY demolished by eminent domain as an excuse to be rid of it. I think of it's rich black history, and familys, and children who grow up in it.And even with all that honestly and i'm going to be honest, wonder if maybe the Meachem Park area should be leveled and destroyed along with all the drug dealers and crime in it!! And build a new Meachem Park, one resident's, familys and everyone can be proud of so no one can use it's crime and drugs as a reason to not care and give up on it. Bless all the familys of this tragedy, including Cookie who WILL be missed.Pray, it's all we have!

Lifelong Kirkwood Resident says:

So, what does Ben Gordon, who thinks Cookie is such a hero want for Meacham Park? Unity with Kirkwood? I'd say that Kirkwood City Council bent over backwards for Meacham Park, admitting any child from Meacham Park into the R-7 district, granting resident access to all public facilities, and providing public services like waste pick up, police and fire protection. When the City Council found a way to finance the increased costs through the tax base of a major shopping plaza, it paid more than market value for those willing to sell in Meacham. And the property values of Meacham residents have grown substantially with the market forces that drove $160,000 homes to $240,000, as Mr. Moore points out. Indeed, Kirkwood has shown consistant love for Meacham and asked little in return.

So I ask again, what does Mr. Moore want from Kirkwood that it does not already provide? Respect? True respect is not given. Respect is earned. Councilwoman Carr served as secretary of the Meacham Park Neighborhood Association. Predominantly white Kirkwood churches have outreach programs with churches in Meacham. What respect is not given to those who earn it?

These attempts to villify the members of Kirkwood city government to justify the mass murder performed by Mr. Thornton are in terrible taste, and backed by no fact. Kirkwood is a strong community due in part to their strong and fair leadership, and to justify this violence is reprehensible. You quote Mr. Gordon as saying "I don't condone murder." Yet, the next sentence he says that the murders were the act of a "red-blooded American." This is nothing more than a commendation of mass murder over a personal dispute.

If this is about some systemic problem where Kirkwood is the aggressor and Meacham is the victim, then I ask, after our Council members and police are murdered by Meacham residents, after generations of Meacham children have enjoyed our schools, what does Kirkwood have to do to be right?

Dick Asscock says:

I'm glad I found this blog to hear other perspectives and a debate. We all know we don't get that from the main stream media.

Even as a white man, I understand frustration, but I can't condone what this man did. Too bad Cookie didn't know how to seek help and a following in the digital age.

On a side note, maybe the African American community can stop voting Democratic as a whole. You're simply voting for more annoying government and regulation to keep you down. That's an easy few things to write, but think about it.

peace out

Stand Up for Our Community says:

Meacham Park has now spawned two cop killers. Killers of its own cops and city officials. Similar to a toxic waste dump, Meacham Park should be seen as a threat to the health and safety of the community. To that end, the Kirkwood city government should move to complete the redevelopment of that area by not opposing it and by greasing the skids of any developers who have an interest in the area. Let them pay a fair market price to those living there and offer relocation expenses as well. Sure, some of the good folks of Meacham Park may have their lives disrupted but they too are victims of the bad element.

This may seem like a harsh solution but it would be a win-win for all involved. Kirkwood does not have to put up any longer with this liability that is dragging it down. They would be completely within their rights to clean up Meacham Park and eradicate this cesspool once and for all.

R Spencer says:

Gee it was really swell of you all to let the little black kids go to school in Kirkwood, mighty grand of you, considering.
Meecham Park is a place of white crime. Who do you think buys the drugs from the black dealers there. Places like Meecham Park are intentionally not policed. If the Kirkwood police stop all of the white drug users from going to Meecham Park then there would be no drug dealers in Meecham Park and the crime would shift to Kirkwood.
Typical other side of the tracks politics.
Most of Missouri is racist to the core. I come from a Missouri town that to this very day doesn't have a single black in it.
Charles Thorton wasn't a drug dealer, he worked for a living and it will probably come out that he was labeled as an uppity
black and was discriminated against.
I wonder if he got the same consideration from the City Council as say B&D Pavement (good old boys) or Leritz. I bet they have no trouble getting permits to earn a living.
I bet neither of those companies received hundreds of dollars of tickets either.
I wouldn't go so far as to call the guy a hero, but I would say he was shooting in the right direction.

None of your business says:

I grew up in Kirkwood and am sickened by the avaricious mentality of the "New" Kirkwood.

Liberals with "No War in Iraq" yard signs shopping at Wal-Mart. Religous hypocrites raping the souls of the poor and downtrodden.

When is this going to end? The double standards and blatant disregard for human dignity.

Kirkwood sealed its fate by implementing Eminent Domain.

You reap what you sow by putting human dignity below big box retailers like Wal Mart.

Charles Thornton will rot in hell. So will the bastards that sent him there!

Education costs money, but then so does ignorance says:

If we really want to bring politics to this debate . . . I would have to say the relatively conservative politics generally practiced in Kirkwood are what have kept Meacham park down and so divided and what made it possible for a man to walk into city hall with a gun. I hardly think that providing education, public facilities, and fire/police protection can be considered "bending over backwards" as Lifelong Kirkwood Resident mentioned. It seems quite a fair trade to give this 100 year old community basic necessities in return for over half of their former land area.

If anything, MORE social programs are what this community needs in order to EDUCATE the residents (children AND parents) and increase their chances of being able to responsibly benefit from the economic opportunities that living in a place like Kirkwood offers. Every man for himself and no government regulation only works when every man begins at the same starting line. From my experience with many close conservative friends, not every successful person is the self-made man or women he/she would like to believe themselves to be. This said I also of course do not believe Cookie's actions were justified or heroic.

(I do agree the various opinions here are much more insightful than anything I've seen in the media . . . the same can NOT be said for the disgusting white pride website I accidentally encountered when I googled Meacham Park)

Doc says:

"The tree of liberty must be watered from time to time with the blood of patriots and rebels."
My first impression is that 'Cookie' Thornton was both.
He evidently tried over and over to communicate his feelings of injustice to the powers that be only to be slapped down and silenced at every turn.
Every man has his limit...Mr. Thornton was obviously and tragically pushed past his.

J.C. Johnson says:

This is very simple. This was a HATE crime. This scumbag of a man cookie thornton committed a hate crime that should rank up there with the lynchings and church bombings of the south in the 1900's. Is he that different from the group that would lynch a black for whistling at a white girl. Answer is no. This HATE crime will set back Kirkwood and St. Louis for years. It will be no longer safe for white citizens to go around the communtiy unarmed. I have never owned a gun and on less then a handful of times i have actually shot a gun, but I am now going to buy a gun and get a permit and arm myself. I just have to be safe now. cookie's brother called it a war, and I now will take steps to protect my life and the lifes of others I hold dear. This was a HATE crime. So sad, so sad....

SAT666 says:

God bless you Cookie. You have earned our eternal respect and love. Your selfless act now belongs to the ages.

No one special says:

This man wasn't a hero.
The last time a declared war was fought on our soil was when the U.S. refused to let the confederacy secede from the nation; when the north decided to take a stand against slavery (and because if we didn't they would have received the support of other nations and would have crushed the north). Before that was the American Revolution where we told the Brits to get out and leave us alone, then we declared war once they refused, and THEN we used our guns. We gave the Brits a warning and a chance to defend themselves and did not start killing needlessly.

If you really want to compare Cookie Thornton to someone in history I think it would be more appropriate to compare him to John Wilkes Booth or Lee Harvey Oswald.

Sanity says:

Re: R Spencer

Clearly, you are very much uninformed on the subject at hand. From your inability to spell Meacham Park correctly to your suggestion that it's a center for "white crime", too many signs of an outside perspective based off their inhibitions learned from the television, internet, and newspaper.

Let me explain to you R. Spencer, from the perspective of someone who can actually pinpoint Meacham on a map, and someone who has actually been to Meacham.

So the "white kids" who buy drugs from the dealers in Meacham are generating angst ridden unintelligent cop killers like Kevin Johnson aka "block head"? Really? I'm pretty sure it's those "white kids" who are putting rims on the cars of the late 80s model oldsmobiles you seeing driving out of Meacham everyday. If you could, please explain to me how the "white kids" forced Kevin Johnson to slay an officer following a routine call, or how the "white kids" forced Cookie to enter the Kirkwood City Hall and unload on everyone in sight.

B&D and Leritz dont have a problem acquiring permits, that's correct. That's because they are legitamite businesses who dont park their machinery on the front yards of their homes. Real businesses have worksites for their equipment, not the street in front of their house.

What it boils down to is Cookie couldnt abide by the laws, the same laws that are applicable to whites, yellows, reds, blues, etc. Cookie was inherently too stupid to realize you cant park a dump truck in your front yard, and also inherently too stupid to realize that killing 5 innocent people does nothing for his "good fight" except place the toxic waste inhabitants of Meacham Park in a state of regression that will not end until they are cleared out of their homes for good. Godspeed developers and the city of Kirkwood.

Sanity??? says:

My heart hurts to read some of the things that have been written here.

I am not African American, therefore, you cannot simply write this off as another black person turning this into another "convenient race issue".

Have any of you really read what you have written here? Perhaps you can't see through your white privilege to understand the dynamics that affect African Americans in your community as well as the nation. For you it may be just another "convenient issue of race" because you are conveniently white and do not have to be subjected to issues of race and racism on a daily basis. I mean the audacity one has to state, "Kirkwood City Council bent over backwards for Meacham Park, admitting any child from Meacham Park into the R-7 district, granting resident access to all public facilities, and providing public services like waste pick up, police and fire protection".

So basically the residents of Meacham Park should be ever so grateful that the city council afforded them their civil rights and simply tolerate them taking away their neighborhood to put up a shopping center. (Which by the way many African Americans get followed around because of the color of their skin.)

I won't disagree that the community of Meacham Park is in a state of crisis but this community has been oppressed for decades and no matter how loud they shout no one seems to listen. People only condemn. By the way, every group of young black males that congregate is not a group of drug dealer or gang members. Meacham Park is filled with beautiful children, mothers, fathers, and grandparents.

Who cares if people put rims on the cars of the late 80s model oldsmobiles on their cars? Come on, really, what does that have to do with anything? Sounds like someone if feeding stereotypes to me.

By the way, not all residents of Meacham do this and surprise, there are caucasion people who put rims on their cars too. The same laws may apply to people of all creeds, however, they are not enforced equally., (thank goodness your white privilege allows you to call people yellow, red, blue, HOW SILLY)

Perhaps those of you who are so critical about the residents of Meacham Park should look at yourselves and the racist remarks that have come out in your writing. No, Mr. Thornton was not a "hero" but he was an educated man who I understand was also generous and giving to his comnmunity. It appears he was was pushed to his limit and snapped.

Unfortunately until we all (caucasion and people of color)look at the way we treat others, our world will stay violent. It's very easy for you to hold Meacham Park as a whole accountable for the actions of two residents, but what role did Kirkwood at large play in these two tragic events? How many times have you engaged in a negative conversation about "those people" and even worse with or in front of your children?

It's easy to point fingers, but all of us have a role in combating the issues of racism and racial divide because as you see, it affects us all. I challenge some of you to open your minds and read an article called "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack" by Peggy McIntosh.

Xell says:

Its sad, but Cookie is exactly what it took for us to focus and open debates on the problems... I believe he exhausted all peaceful options known to him and reached out to all he could.
If we just cleaned up and went along our way never talking about the problems then you can call Cookie what you want. The comments on this form are evidence that Cookie knew exactly what he was doing.

I don't think I'm alone in the knowledge that "driving while black" is a crime in West County. What are the stats on black crime in Kirkwood vs white? My opinion is that its based on the welfare system, which is a handcuff, not a hand up or a hand out. Welfare has handcuffed our poorest into a life of complacence, turning their children to crime because they don't have anyone shedding light on how else to make an honest buck.

Here we have an upscale Kirkwood, with Entrepreneurs, great businesses, highly educated residents that could "adopt" Meacham Park and take the handcuffs off the dead end lifecycle in which the neighborhood is stuck.

Hindsight is 20/20, but if I was on the city council I'd have found somewhere for Cookie to park his trucks. There are plenty of spots and businesses that could/should have lent a hand to someone who was clearly an asset to his neighborhood and deserving of civic guidance rather than harassment.

For a fraction of what he was being fined for the city could have rented him a space. Maybe he was given options like that? He said the truth will come out.

Mike says:

I'll buy the first plane ticket to send all the blacks in this country back to Africa!!!

Mikesucks says:

Mike, how about I buy you a plane ticket and send you back to Europe?

I cant believe what I am hearing! says:

Before I say everything that I need to say, I want to make it very clear that I in no way think that what Cookie Thorton did was right. I do not believe in any situation should you take someone elses life. With that said I would like to comment on a few blogs that i read on here. Let me start off with the most ridiculous one first. This statement came from United we stand divided we fall. In this blog this person stated that you could not even get pizza delivered in meacham park, and that in the last 5 years meacham park has gone from family oriented to a life of drugs and crime......Are you completely out of your mind? If anything that is the COMPLETE opposite of what you said!! I am a 29 year old WHITE woman who not only grew up hanging out in meacham park but also have family that stll live there. If nothing else Meacham park is more family oriented now than ever, and yes you absoloutly can get a pizza delivered there today! I can tell you that in my middle school and high school years(10 years ago) Meacham park was not the best part of town, and yes back then you could not get a pizza delivered there, nor would police patrol the streets, but Meacham park is slowly but surely becoming a safer place. Its amazing to me that people are trying to make this a "meacham Park" issue. Cookie Thorton was just a resident of the community. Meacham Park should not have to take a blow becasue of cookies selfish act. I think a few of you on this blog should take some time out to get to know some of the residents and children of meacham park. I think that you would find that the image that has been painted of them is not true!

Sparkles says:

Please SEND ME back to Europe!!! And don't forget to covert all my worthless American $ to Euros.

Sparklessucks says:

Ok, please visit the nearest American Indian Reservation Casino for your ticket.

Matt says:

I simply cannot comprehend how this tragedy could be turned into an issue of us versus them. A man committed mass murder of innocent lives, and people rally around him as a hero? Do you people who feel this way have no sense of humanity, or is that you are letting emotions distort your reality? This is not an issue of race. This is an issue of whether or not a man who murders five people in cold blood is someone who you want your children to look up to.

Perhaps it is true that things could be better in Meacham. To be sure, they could be better all over this city, both for blacks as well as for whites. People act as if the day to day issues we face are completely different. The truth is racism goes both ways, and we all face the same problems: intolerance, violence, hate, and yes, even civil fines.

Violence and anger will never solve truly any problem, it will only create more. Take a look back at when Martin Luther King was leading the people of this country to make changes. People would gather and become educated on the problems at hand, and take civil and peaceful action to remedy them. It worked and had an effect that is still seen today, many years later.

That is the way problems are solved. Not with guns and words of hate, but with clear thinking and civil action.

Jerry Mandering says:

I'm pretty sure that the road to social equilibrium between Kirkwood and Meachum Park has not been aided by this "hero"

If you think things were bad before just wait, things are about to get a lot worse. Cops don't tend to let things like this go. I can't really say I blame them.

Another Kirkwood Resident speaking out says:

To Sanity:

You stated: I mean the audacity one has to state, "Kirkwood City Council bent over backwards for Meacham Park, admitting any child from Meacham Park into the R-7 district, granting resident access to all public facilities, and providing public services like waste pick up, police and fire protection".

So basically the residents of Meacham Park should be ever so grateful that the city council afforded them their civil rights and simply tolerate them taking away their neighborhood to put up a shopping center.

Do you KNOW the history of Meacham Park? Kirkwood did NOT have to provide these services. Meacham Park ASKED to be annexed, and Kirkwood obliged. Kirkwood PAID OVER MARKET VALUE to the residents of Meacham who had a CHOICE of whether or not to sell their homes to the redevelopment project.

I define myself politically as very liberal, but I can't tolerate the sheer abundance of ignorance around these subjects, and chalk it up to oppressed African-Americans. As a woman, I've experienced my fair share of discrimination, especially as a woman in a man's job market. I don't shoot people because of it.

Another Kirkwood res... says:

Sorry Sanity, I meant to rail on Sanity???

Amen, Sanity!

becksy says:

I do not think that where any of the people involved in this tragic incident lived has any relavance.Meacham Park has problems and so does Kirkwood. i'm sick tired of everyone turning this into Kirkwood vs.Meacheam Park and race vs. race.It can be taken both ways,"The white council members made Cookies life hell because he was a black man" or "Cookie was black so he shot the white council members because they we're white" Really what help is that to this situation. It will only cause anger and rage and start more problems in the community. And to everyone, racism comes in all colors and creeds.

I do not consider Cookie a hero. The only thing i see is needless loss of life, yes that's what they all payed with. The highest cost of all!I have read many of the blogs on the Kirkwood shootings, and many i understand much of the anger, hurt and the genuine pain. But, for the people who revel in the racism and condone any of what happened that awful Febuary night, scare the hell out of me.Your the ones who are racist and feed on this. The ones with revenge and hatred on your minds that are the entire problem.I shiver to think you live all around me, i walk by you all everyday not knowing what lies beneath.Chaulk it up to what this is, a devastating Febuary night, with a horrific ending St.Louis County,City and surroundings areas will never forget.Stop using it for your own agendas. Stop turning it into a race war.

To R.Spencer who blogged and i quote."Meacham Park is a place of white crime"-End i quote. It takes two to tango. Both hands exchange and recieve.

and

i quote courtesy of R.Spencer
"If Kirkwood Police stop all of the white drug users from going to Meacham Park then there would be no drug dealers in Meacham Park and the crime would switch to Kirkwood"

Eh really you think? No matter what there would still be drug dealers in Meacham Park and duh, everywhere else.Stop your racist comments, they are pathetic and weak.addiction has no color.Kirkwood has problems with drugs as well, open your eyes then you could maybe see for yourself. And i have a dear friend who used to live in Meacham Park and we saw white, black,mexican,etc..buy drugs.again addiction has no color.Drug sales are in all neighborhoods.I think your a very racist person! And sadly enough not the only one.

Oh and by the way You more than once spelled Meacham Park wrong. If i thought with your mentality would'nt that mean your white if you can't spell Meacham Park.See how silly that sounds. Oh wait sounds like you.LOL!

Hold on Here says:

Cookie Thornton was not a man who was harassed by the city and pushed to the brink of retaliation as I have read here. There were no special laws just for him. He was simply a man who refused to take responsibility for his own actions. He was focused only on his own selfish interests. He did not understand the responsibilities of living in a community and respecting the rights of others. He was like a little child whining "Give it to me" and "No, no, no" - but with one big difference - little children throw tantrums by tossing their toys around.

So this incident was not about a normal person being pushed to the brink and reacting the only way he could. It was about an irresponsible, immature, self centered child who thought all his problems were caused by someone else. Patriot? Rebel? Hero? Oh, ok.

Cookie Thornton says:

I was neither sick nor insane and I resent the aspersions being cast upon my character.

I will tell you exactly why I did what I did.

You see, the Kirkwood City Council and its pig oppressors had been hassling me for years. No matter what I did to seek redress for my grievances, the collapsing system of justice cut me off at the knees. I was left with only one avenue open to me for relief, and I chose to journey down that road for not only my sake, but for the sake of all Americans who are treated like second class citizens by a venal and decaying system.

I chose to strike a blow for what has vanished in our country, for what is in our country, and for the future of our country.

I will write more as soon as I am able. I must go now. Thomas Jefferson and John Brown have requested to meet with me.

Stopthemadness says:

Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton legacy is one of a racist murder. A lost man with sear hatred of his fellow man. There is no justification for his behavior or for those that in some sick fashion believe that his behavior in some way was justified or will promote positive change. Rather than accepting responsibility for ones own actions Mr. Thornton ripped a community apart with hate. The victims of this hate crime are the 5 innocent deceased, the wounded and the good people of the entire Kirkwood community.

Rather than trying to see this tragedy in shades of a person’s skin color, society needs to condemn his action and those of his ill advised supporters. Only when you can comprehend issues in deeper terms that go behind preconceptions and self-biases can you foster the goodwill of mankind.

Are you Blind says:

People need to stop living in the past, and need to learn how to forgive. There are social injustice and hardships in all walks of life, the rich, poor, all ethnicities and religions. Do not fall into the trap of blaming others for the path you have chosen.

Mr. Yost says:

It took a couple of slugs, but now I get it.

Guess I shouldn't have harassed Cookie so much.

Past Citizen of Kirkwood says:

I knew Cookie. He was a bright, happy, God fearing man, and Kirkwood's racist politics sucked all the life out of him, until he snapped. I can see how this happened. Kirkwood's police department and the entire city council have treated black people unjustly for as long as I can remember and they like to keep things hush, hush, out of the media, so that others think Kirkwood is this wonderful municipality to live. Not, you are pulled over just for being black. The officers will ride through Meacham Park and harass black men, especially, who were hanging out, minding their own business, not hurting anyone, while white kids could hang out in Kirkwood, at taco bell, in the commons, wherever, without being harassed by the police. We can't even have a family gathering without the police coming to the house attempting to disrupt our party, while the white men at Harley Davis could party all night long, with their loud music and loud motorcycles.

I am so tired of hearing about the poor officer who lost his life two years ago. The same white man who called the black people of Meacham Park a bunch of monkey's, the same white man who could have saved a child's life, but instead, because this child was black, he died, and you don't hear about him. Bam Bam had his whole life in front of him, but he is dead because Kirkwood is hell bent of harassing black children instead of helping them.

I don't believe in capital punishment, but apparently Kirkwood does, so Cookie flipped the script on them and took the law in his own hands, taking out some the people who treated him unjustly. But not before countless efforts to deal with them, "politically correct".

I know people are mourning over the lost of their loved ones, and I pray for all of the families. Special prayers go out to Cookie's family. He was not the kind of person who would take someone else's life; he was pushed over the edge.

Kirkwood's entire city council needs to be investigated. Think about it, why would a black businessman who likes white people, kill a bunch of them. He realized, that they were going to give him hell as long as lived in Kirkwood and tried to do business in Kirkwood, and this was not just about parking tickets. Cookie sacrificed his life so that we will wake up and realize what is going on in Kirkwood, one of the most racist cities in St. Louis, next to Florissant.

none yo biz says:

Mr.Yost you are a worldclass ass with no moral conviction. It's a shame you didn't take a slug that night.I'm not so sure anyone would have missed you!!

blogger cookie thornton,

Cookie isn't meeting up with the men you speak of, he is burning in hell. Murder is a sin.It breaks one of the 10 commandments. And he was not defending himself against 'physical" violance. So it wasn't self defense. There for anyone who has read the bible knows murder is a sin.We can all pray for cookies soul.

He is not a man anyone should look to as a hero. I just feel sorry for him and all the people who are now silenced forever. In case we have all forgotten, there all dead so no one can stand up for themselves. So do we really know both sides of the story?Nope and never will. One man and one stolen police officers gun took care of that. What a waste of life!!All their lives. And yes Cookie's life as well.

Fuck ya'll says:

To sanity?? and i can't believe what i'm hearing!

GO FUCK YOURSELVES!! BITCHES

fiesty says:

Why is it only African americans think they are picked on? Why is it african americans think they are the only ones to experiance racism. I think black people are more racist than anyone cause you all bitch so much.I don't owe you shit, nobody regardless of color.

I will agree though it does seem like a crime to drive black in west county.
it's also a crime to drive white with black passangers, especially late at night. And that is bullshit, really it is.

Mayor Swoboda says:

Jeez! I needed all this like a couple of holes in my head!

Martin says:

Past Citizen of Kirkwood, lack of humor Mr. Yost and Sat666, it appears you share the same hatred that drove Thornton to his own destruction. It pains the rest of us to comprehend the darkness and bigotry deeply instilled in your presence. Redeem yourselves before you hatred consumes you like it did Thornton.
Thornton will only be know as a racist murder, a killer, a sinner, a selfish self promoter of his own cause. What rational person would identify them self as his friend or a supporter. Thornton’s behavior and that of past white transgressions in lynching African American descendants are hate crimes, violent behaviors that should not be glorified. Regardless of the methods used, a gun or rope, the end results are the same and are not tolerable behavior or sustaining concepts in a civilized society. Please stop the cycle of hated and search your soul for the right answers.

croydonfacelift says:

Truly unbelievable. Six innocent people are murdered by a maniac for enforcing municipal ordinances which said maniac didn't see fit to obey, and you people are standing up for him? Trying to stand inside the shoes of the insane will only make you -- surprise!--insane. What a total joke you all are--and by total, I mean beyond all hope, and by all, I mean the large number of you who try to justify what this dead jackass did. I'd like to see you go up to the surviving children of the executed and tell them that after all, it's really Mommy or Daddy's fault, because they were white.

Untie that parachute. you absolute, irredeemable fools.

Come On! says:

Hero? Victim? COME ON!!!

Shame on Cookie, Shame on his Family, Shame on his community, SHAME!!!

I read a sign in front of a home in Meacham Park this past Friday stating, "Rest in Peace Cookie". There were all sorts of flowers and stuffed animals at this make shift vigil for a "martyred vigilante".

It is 2008 and people are people. FOX 2 news soft balled questions to Cookie's mother and brother that night and without any thought of remorse and as evidenced by the shameful response by some in the "black community", it can be surmised that ignorance by any other name is represented in the actions and reactions of those associated with Cookie! This may be the year of an elected black president, who enjoys the support from all spectrums "Americans", and not by any one ethnic minority or majority. We have come to a time in our society that the responsibility of those who commit crimes and the responsibility of those in society to prevent crimes are paramount to a community’s success. Making excuses for evil people and continuing to blame outdated and obsolete stereotypes and racism as the root cause is again; ignorant!!!

LET'S TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY! Let's realize that excuses are just that; Excuses!! If I broke city ordinances and if I verbally assaulted local magistrates, my community would view me as a thorn in their side and I would have been ostracized by my neighbors for not being thoughtful enough to follow the simple rules and ordinances that are "required" of all citizens.

I guess the same ignorance that has plagued the black leadership of the last 2 decades across America, is still empowering ignorance and lack of responsibility among the youth in the black community and hence I go back to my original statement. SHAME!!!

Shame upon all who feel that these "justified actions" can account for the cold blooded murder and the countless suffering of all those effected by the senseless tragedy that happened at city hall this week.

Come on. Sarcastically speaking! Isn't it about time that criminals meet there responsibility to their communities. Meacham Park residents are also victims of Cookie's horrible actions. Stop falling back on a century of excuses and START taking responsibility for your and your family’s criminal and evil behavior.

Again, freedom of oppression starts with freeing yourself from the bonds of blame and lack of responsibility, so that each individual American can grow to have the same opportunities as the next man.

Placing blame is just another convenient way for those who do not wish to conform to society (The collective rules and norms based on the ethical and moral collective conscience of a government of the people).

Does being black and from Meacham Park mean that you should not have to obey or follow the same rules as all other citizens in your community?

If so, perhaps equality and lack of indifference should be reserved to those who refuse to be "shackled" by their own excuses and their own refusal to grow as people and as responsible members of a society.

I spat on Cookie's vigil site and I have no sympathy for his family or for the Meacham Community (other than by his estranged wife who returned and actually showed remorse). Which is far more than I can say for his ignorant Mother and Brother who both deserve to be ostracized for their comments and their association to the worst mass murderers of our time.

May god bless the victims of Cookie's wrath and may Cookie burn in hell for his awful and disgusting actions. SHAME!!!

Cookie Thornton says:

In fact, I am not burning in hell; rather, I have been enshrined in the American Hall of Martyrs.

I join a most respectable and noble company of men and women such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Sojourner Truth, Thomas Jefferson, John Brown, and others.

Let me attempt to again explain why I did what I did:

I was left with no further options. Indeed, I tried playing by the rules for eight years. It got me nowhere. When a man has tried to be lawful and has acted in good faith, yet those in positions of power conspire against him, then a good man must, in the final analysis, take matters into his own hands and smite his oppressors.

My deeds were not done for any particular racial group; instead, they were done for all Americans and should be looked upon as a beacon of freedom and liberty in these dark times in which the government seeks to steal our rights and trample upon our freedoms. In short, the man's foot on my throat was more than I could bear and I put a stop to it.

WTF says:

To whomever made the previous post in Cookie's name: The difference between yourself and the "company" you now claim to join is that the others were truly being persecuted in some way. How were you being punished unfairly? I know other contractors with businesses that are subjugated to the same laws, yet they do not feel persecuted. What makes you special that you do not have to abide by these same rules? Why couldn't you just stop parking your vehicles in front of your house? After all if you had simply done this, your fines would have disappeared.

It seems as though you got greedy and tried to sue the city to make millions, but unfortunately you ran into a judicial system that is run by sane, competent, and rational individuals that dismissed your case. Why didn't you have legal representation in these trials? Would no lawyer take your case because they knew it was a losing battle, or was it because all lawyers racist too?

Martyr....I think not.

FYI - Kirkwood is not the only city with these types of laws. Neighboring Webster Groves has similar rules in place and somehow people there manage to live with these oppressive laws.
Martyr....I think not.

Secret Cervix Sucks says:

Too bad Cookie didn't survive so he and Michael Devlin could share each other's body fluids in jail.

Come On says:

Another kind anticdote for the scumbag loser depicting himself as Cookie.

You have done a fine job of articulating your heartless, shameless, and obviously uneducated ignorant point of view.

Martyr...Come-on. Get a life and don't try to justify the actions of psychotic madman as something just. If you believe what you posted, then you are a truly sick, disturbed, and an awfully stupid and selfish piece of shit.

Cookie should have been incarcerated for not staying current with his legal obligations and for continuing to break ordinance after ordinance. Oh I forgot... Ignorant black bastards like your self and Cookie feel that these laws don’t apply to the BLACK MAN.

Again, Shame on You, Shame on Cookie and thank the good lord that someone finally killed this piece of shit criminal.

The world is a far better place without him and once the negative blight of this community is rid of this element, the sooner the true healing of a find a gentle community can begin.

You are despicable!

Probably a petty criminal as well who blames everyone for their lack of being civil or descent. You can go to hell too.

Ignorant is you! By “one other name” and you know exactly what you are. A terrible SHAME!

Hopefully Cookie suffered a little and I was prouid to spit on the make shift memorial and those from his family that saw me hawk a loogy on this, could only bow there heads at the horrible shame that their family member has brought on them and those associated with this "CRIMAINAL". The world is a far better place place without him and I'm certain without you.

God bless the heros from City Hall and thank god COOKIE is finally DEAD!

Anonymous says:

Any resident of Meacham Park has basically two choices:

1) get out of the ghetto while they still can

2) assert their civil rights

It is up to the law-abiding citizens of Meacham Park to take back their streets from predators, wearing whatever colors or uniforms.

Video cameras, protests, lawyers and the glaring eye of publicity are appropriate tools for the task. Breaking the law is not.

Good luck.

Past Citizen of Kirkwood says:

RE: Lifelong Kirkwood Resident

The following remark is one of the most racist statements in this log of blogs; "Kirkwood City Council bent over backwards for Meacham Park, admitting any child from Meacham Park into the R-7 district, granting resident access to all public facilities, and providing public services like waste pick up, police and fire protection."

Are you really that far back in the dark ages? Have you read the Constitution of the United States of America? You need to read what Sanity??? had to say, and get some perspective of life outside of you.

As a matter of fact, all of you, who are so quick to judge someone, while you have not walked in his or her shoes, should read what Sanity??? wrote.

We are not condoning what Cookie did, but because we have been victims of racism all of our lives, we can relate to the problems he faced everyday. And we have to deal with the police brutality on a regular basis. So, try looking at the situation at its entirety, and stop going off on people who understand something of which you have absolutely no knowledge.

anonymous says:

"Lifelong Kirkwood Resident" was not saying these things to show how great Kirkwood is. The point they were making, if you paid a little more attention and stopped putting your own racist spin on it, is that Meacham Park had none of those things before being annexed as part of Kirkwood.

This person was not being self righteous as you claim, they were simply showing how Meacham Park has benefitted by becoming a part of Kirkwood. Do you think Meacham park would be better of than it is today if it had never been annexed by this city? Perhaps they still wouldn't have access to indoor plumbing, education, or municipal services. For as much as people claim to be oppressed by the city of Kirkwood, it is likely that it is still better than the alternative.

I agree that steps still need to be taken to improve Meacham Park, but this will never be accomplished as long as the residents there keep putting up a wall and shouting "racism" at those on the outside. Thank you for listening to my own point of view.

Cookie Thornton says:

It is fascinating to me that those so ready to cast aspersions at my character and race are typically the ones who betray their ignorance and prejudice via their scrawlings on this blog.

To those who hate me, I say this: first, please take a look at your high school English notes. Your use of diction, grammar, as well as your rhetorical styles, are abhorrent.

Secondly, please read some rudimentary logic and learn how to construct an argument. You reveal your ignorance via your fragmented, hate-infused outbursts and redneck philosophies.

Finally, if you feel you must launch sputem at my memorial and family, this in and of itself places you at the head of the Hee-Haw, white trash, trailer park family that is most of the state of Missouri.

I go now to my eternal rest with the martyrs. American patriots: do as I did and don't let government go any more awry than it already has done.

Justice? says:

I read about Kevin Johnson...Would Bam-Bam have lived had Kevin not asked him to run over to Granny's to get his keys so he could run from the police? Did Kevin ask for the officer's help earlier that day? I doubt it. Kevin was looking out for himself and not Bam-Bam's health.

What about the idiot (friend of Kevin???) that shot the mother of Kevin's child? Did Kevin think of his daughter's future??? I doubt it?

Momma Thorton? You said your children don't bring their problems to you? Killer Thornton must not have thought much of you either.

Brother Thornton? Act of War? You still wearing your pants around your knees from the time you spent in prison?

I can only hope that none of these idiots are related to George Thornton. Class guy!

Where are all the wonderful souls I knew at KHS that wanted to make a difference? The Wards, Jones, Hodges, Millers and many others. You will always be remembered as helpful friends. Look past the indiscretions and join together to make M-Park a stronger community together with Kirkwood.

Back to the Future says:

This can happen anywhere. One simple question, now that this has happened in Kirkwood what are we, as residents, going to do about it? Clear direction and real answers are needed. Time to move away from the computer and step up to the plate.

Back to the Future2 says:

Meant to elaborate, now that this has happened what are we going to do to bring the community together so this doesn't happen again?

Angry says:

I am looking for a place to vent and I suppose this is as good a place as any. Though many of the comments made here are far more LOUD than what I would like to say. I grew up in Kirkwood. I am white. Not every white kid in Kirkwood is rich. My mother was one of the working poor. We lived very close to Meacham Park. Close enough to hear the guns most nights. And this was back in the 70's and 80's. I had my car broken into several times by the same Meacham Park resident. To this day I just leave my doors unlocked. I figure if you're bold enough to steal MY stuff then please go through the door and not break my window. I was harassed daily on the bus and while trying to get to my door by Meacham Park boys. This slowed down ONLY when I got the nerve to stand up to one of them. But it didn't stop. Back then and now white people are afraid to take a stand against the bad apples of Meacham (and I truly believe they are the minority there). Thus there is a belief in Meacham that it is o.k. to act this way....after all, that's how it has always been. I know LOTS of GREAT people in Meacham and who have come out of Meacham. But there is an element there....a group of people....who have ALWAYS believed they can do whatever they please. The same ones believe that somehow Kirkwood owes them MORE than other Kirkwood residents are owed simply because they live in Meacham. I believe Cookie was one of those people. This group of Meacham residents need to, if nothing else, think of their neighbors who work hard and abide by the laws. And I mean their neighbors right there in Meacham. I just wish someone from Meacham would express some anger in how all of this is tarnishing their neighborhood. Poo on Kirkwood, Kirkwood will survive. But if things like this keep happening....Meacham may not.

I SPEAK GOOD TOO! says:

Whoever is posting as Cookie Thornton is correct in pointing out the grammatical errors in other posts. However, just because you're more saavy with the written word doesn't make you any "more right" than the next person.

I only wish you were as good at making moral arguments as you are at typing.

Now about the claim of those who you say put themselves in the front of the redneck, hee-haw line for spitting at your memorial. I'm sure most people would still rather be considered a redneck than a dumb, racist, greedy, murderer who died in vain for a misguided cause. Its a shame you took truly innocent people with you. Your mother did a fine job in raising not one but two murderers in the same family.

If you're postings really reflect how you feel then I wouldn't be surprised when I see YOU on the news next for committing a similar atrocity.

I SPEAK GOOD TOO! says:

PS - It's people like you that support continued racism of blacks against whites that keeps fueling these rednecks that you despise. Perhaps if you didn't condone and support the actions of a killer, people wouldn't retaliate by spitting in your neighborhood.

jon Smith says:

The Thornton incident is a result of a
man (Cookie Thornton) being pushed over
the edge. The town council used their
cops to harass this man. Imagine getting
20 tickets a day? White cops never give
anyone of color a chance. They go out of
their way to harass.

I saw a cop stop a Hispanic man once, the
white cop smiled to his backup, a smile
that said, I got that "spic". Cops are not
good people. They are thugs for the
government.

Cookie is a true hero.

So Glad says:

I'm so Glad someone finally stood up to the Robots that oppress us.
I don't mourn for any Servant of the System that dies serving that system.
They don't mourn for us when we get thrown in jail for breaking their "laws" that we don't understand, condone or pass.
There is no sympathy from the council when you defy their code.
There is no sympathy from me when your code leads you to your own demise.
Most cops and politicians are the lowest of the low in terms of humanity.
I've never met one that deserves anything more than what these Condoned Crooks in Kirkwood got.
Thank You Charles Thornton.

My last post on this blog shall be,
Built in coupleted harmony,
And directed at "I Speak Good Too"
Be he dude or feminine shrew--
You understand little of my life
You drunken husband or whorish wife--
So silence ye: Be it understood:
You really do not speak that good.

Now to my rest I retire--
Safe from governments who do conspire
And those who will never understand
I acted for all across this land.
