RFT on Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Thu Jul 31, 2008 at 10:20:33 AM

If Unreal and the rest of the Riverfront Times editorial staff represent the "brig" on the paper's metaphorical ship of state (we do, and we're damn proud to say so), what does that make the ad department?

Galley slaves!

Anyhoo, the ad rats had their 15 milliseconds of fame last week, when Tonight Show host Jay Leno gave 'em a shout-out -- for a typo.

Leno%201.jpg

Leno%202.jpg

OK, so he doesn't mention the paper by name. But yep, that there's our ad for the Bevo Mill, touting the south-side landmark's summer hours, outdoor happy hour and...Strolling Menstrals.

You know you've hit rough sailing when you can't even spell your typos right.

Here's a link to the video, while it lasts. Find the show from Monday, July 21, then pick Chapter 2, the "News Headlines" feature.

Bar of the Week: The Cat's Meow

Thu Jul 31, 2008 at 08:00:00 AM

Bar of the Week: Cat's Meow
Where: 2600 S. 11th Street
www.catsmeowstl.com

"So what's in the Panty Remover?"

With that innocent question, a few gentlemen at the Cat's Meow perked up their ears. The bartender silently pulled out a bottle of the mystery liquor and poured a thimble-size shot.

Ballpark Village: A Heads-Up About Cordish's Rep for Draconian Dress Codes

Tue Jul 29, 2008 at 12:06:00 PM

As you may have heard, the Ballpark Village deal was sealed last week.

yurts.jpg
Ballpark Village idiocy: No yurts -- and a Cordish dress code?!
The St. Louis Cardinals, the mayor's office and Baltimore-based Cordish Companies, the developer, have finally agreed on the project's size (sort of), scope (sort of) and financing (sort of).

Though it'll be a while yet before any foundation is poured, the Cardinals are saying they plan to put somethingin place before next year's All-Star Game. Sadly, we don't think it'll be yurts or crappie bait stands, as Unreal modestly suggested earlier this year in "It Takes a Village," our very own development proposal for the crater. Oh, well. At least we endeavored to employ a smidgen of creative vision.

Video: Saint Louis Bike Tours: South Grand

Tue Jul 29, 2008 at 10:50:03 AM

Open Video in New Window.

I go into these things with a story I want to tell. I have the whole thing laid out in my head, shot for shot. I show up with an exact aesthetic and theme in mind. I can honestly say, however, that it always turns out the complete opposite of what I think ahead of time.

This best describes the South Grand Bike Tour video. I went into it with thoughts of attractive, young St. Louisians dancing to vinyl only versions of songs at London Calling and various hip twenty-somethings living life in gentrified harmony. What I got was a dead night, simple as that. This is a video about what it's like when you have to make the best out of a slow night. Enjoy.

Bar of the Week: Drinking a Black-and-Red at Foley's Bar in Maplewood

Thu Jul 24, 2008 at 08:06:00 AM

Foley's Bar is a little like that absentee uncle who bought you a six-pack for your thirteenth birthday. Or like that chain-smoking aunt who knows Lita Ford and Joan Jett songs by heart.

This white trash assessment isn't to say Foley's is a bad place; on the contrary, it's a great place to revel in the simple blue-collar pleasures of frosty beer, cheap pool and plenty of local characters.

Dreaming of of a trip to Seville? Kansas City tourism officials have an offer for you, although travelers will need to squint and pretend that the beggar just asked for a down payment on a hamburguesa con queso.

Poll: Will Police Chief Joe Mokwa be Fired?

Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 08:14:55 PM

St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Joe Mokwa has come under fire for the police department's dealings with a contracted towing firm that allegedly gave out cars to officers -- and to Mokwa's daughter, Aimie Mokwa -- for extended "test drives."

Will Mokwa come away from this debacle with his job intact or be fired?

Video: Saint Louis Bike Tours: Maplewood

Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 09:48:13 AM

Here's a short movie about a bike tour of Maplewood. Freelancer Andrew Smith strapped a camera to his handlebars and pedaled around the city. Spot the kid doing a wheelie on his own bike. Up next Tuesday is a tour of Tower Grove Heights and South Grand.

Post any comments below.

RFT Advice Columnist Wanted: Ask a Cougar!

Fri Jul 18, 2008 at 12:11:42 PM

Are you a cougar who's bagged herself a passel of young male tail in the St. Louis wild? Do you have tips to offer aspiring members of the breed and the fellas who want in? Do you wish you could've starred in this week's Unreal feature, "Cougar Heaven"?

Jennifer Silverberg
00coug.jpg
Well, we might still have a place for you -- on our masthead.

That's right: Riverfront Times seeks a scribe for a new column: "Ask a Cougar!"

Our certain someone is experienced as a huntress, but also good with deadlines.

She is witty, and irreverent when necessary. She tells it like it be's.

As RFT's resident coug, she will respond (à la "Dear Abby," only feistier) to a batch of questions from readers (frequency to be determined). Topics covered might include things like proven pouncing technique and protection. No cougar-related query will be off-limits.

Are you our lady? If yes, tell us why, in 500 words or less. In addition, please make up an "Ask a Cougar!" question and pen a response as you would give it to our readers. E-mail your pitch to unreal@riverfronttimes.com.

Grrrrrrrr!

Bar of the Week (Cougar Edition): Failoni's

Fri Jul 18, 2008 at 09:20:17 AM

Bar of the Week: Failoni's

Where: 6715 Manchester Ave.

The sign painted on the building said ''Air Conditioned.'' It needs to be cold in Failoni's in order to preserve bodies of the patrons within, whose leathery skin appears to be cooking from the inside out. So that may be a slight (very slight) exaggeration about the tans, but seriously, if you're pale and under forty, this is not your scene.

Usually, the Bar of the Week is chosen because of its cool/weird/sexy/ugly factor, but this week, a tip came down from Unreal that Failoni's in Dogtown was a hot, live cougar den in the city of St. Louis.
