Get Well Soon, Swingin' Dick
I'll admit it: I actually yelled out when Dick Ankiel went into that wall last night. Usually, even in the case of an injury, I'm much more taciturn, but not this time. Honestly, I thought he was dead. I jumped up, screamed out "Oh my God," and just stood there in my living room, hands pressed to my mouth.
Thankfully, it now appears that the collision, while bad, was nowhere near as devastating as it looked. There are no fractures, either in Dick's face, neck, spine, or anywhere else, meaning the worst thing he's going to have is a wicked case of whiplash and a swollen face.
Nonetheless, I think it's important that the Cardinals recognize just how bad this could have been, and how much pain Ank is going to be in. They say they're going to go day to day with this, and that concerns me. We've seen this team, in the past, be far too willing to allow players to take the field hurt, not only prolonging the effects of their injuries, but hurting the team at the same time.
I hope we don't see that again with this. Put Ankiel on the disabled list, give him the time to actually get healthy. I don't care who you have to call up, whether it's Joe Mather or Jon Jay or whomever else, just do it. Don't put the pressure on Rick to try and hurry back so that he isn't letting down his teammates. Take the decision out of his, and Tony La Russa's, hands.
We've seen what happens when you let a player try to play through an injury; both Chris Duncan and Ankiel have done so the past couple of years, and it hasn't helped either the team or the players. I hope the Cardinals make the right decision this time, and don't give Dick the option of rushing back. Sit him down, and give him the time off to get healthy, completely so.
And get well soon, Dick. Oh, and it might not hurt if you would grow the mustache back. I'm just sayin', is all.
