Aaron's Thing of the Week, 30th October 2009: People Who Died

It's very nearly Halloween, and so I thought I would bring you a Thing of the Week today that has a, shall we say, rather morbid tone to it.  Back when I was thirteen years old, and the Point had just gone on the air, I heard the Jim Carroll Band's "People Who Died" for the first time. It had somehow escaped my notice up 'til that point, even though my own musical knowledge by that time was well advanced thanks to having several older cousins.

Well, suffice it to say I was smitten instantly, and would constantly call the station to request they play it. The only reason I went and saw The Basketball Diaries a couple years later was because it was adapted from Carroll's novel. By that time, I was deep into my own teenage addictive years, and ended up seeing the movie eleven times in the theater, trying to figure out how such an ugly life could seem so fucking romantic.

Sadly, Jim Carroll passed away this year on the 11th of September of a heart attack. And so, as a belated tribute to one of my early heroes and a nice morbid song for this time of the year, I give you perhaps not Jim Carroll's greatest accomplishment, but still, after all these years, my personal favourite.
